Odors in your home can be downright annoying. What’s even more annoying is the need to cover up foul odors or freshen up a space, only to realize you don’t have anything.
It’s happened to me on more occasions than I care to admit.
I got tired of not having a solution so I started the search for alternatives.
What I found were 9 simple ways to make your home smell amazing without candles. These work great for any time of the year. But they are especially amazing when you have unexpected guests or you’re throwing a party.

1. Pot Of Scents
Add your favorite natural scents to a pot of warm simmering water. The steam from the scented water releases a terrific smell in the area.
Try throwing in:
- Cinnamon sticks
2. DIY Carpet Freshener
Carpets can hold just about any smell. From cooking odors to dirty feet to germs/messes from being sick. Solve the problem by making your own carpet freshener with a little baking soda.
To make your own carpet freshener you will combine baking soda & a few drops of essential oils or clove. Then sprinkle it on your carpet & let it sit for 15 minutes. After you vacumm it up you’ll be left with a fantastic smell & clean carpet.
3. Bake Vanilla
This is an old realtors trick. You know how you visit model homes & they always smell like baked goodies? Only you never see them?
Here’s the secret…they baked vanilla extract!
Simply turn your oven on to the lowest setting. Then place a baking dish with a few tablespoons of vanilla extract inside.
4. Clean Your Garbage Disposal
Often times if there’s a bad odor in our homes that we can’t find, it’s probably in the garbage disposal.
This may be one of my all time favorite cleaning hacks. You can clean it with lemon peels, ice cubes, & lots of water. Or use 1/2 cup baking soda & lots of warm water.
If you use the lemon peels, it will give your kitchen an extra burst of citrus smell.
5. Open The Windows
This is probably the simplest way to freshen up your home. Open the windows.
New air will give any odor the boot.
Even on a cold winter day I will sometimes at least crack the windows to remove smells from cooking. It’s fast, effective, & best of all, it’s free!
6. Use A Car Freshener
Clip on car fresheners like this one from Febreeze are a great way to give continuous scents to your home.
You can just clip them onto air vents, just like you would a car.
7. Cotton Balls
As a child I would always find random cotton balls in my Grandma’s house but never could figure out why. Until I got older & she told me that’s how she kept her house smelling good.
All she did was coat in the cotton balls in her favorite scent & then stick them around the house. Ideal locations are:
- in the sofa
- near a bookcase
- close to a vent
- under the coffee table
